MENS SESSION

Yellows (Henderson)

Reds 1 (Chick B)

A low scoring but, nonetheless, exciting game once again was had at the “Theatre of Mature Cheese” as two well balanced, and evenly matched, teams battled out a 1-1 draw, which was probably a fair result on the night.

The first half saw the yellow team take an early lead as a superb strike by Steve Henderson flew past Spencer Lee into the red net.

This was a crucial goal, as at the other end, Tim Richens looked unflappable, and the quality keeper he really is, in the yellows goal!

His evening was made much easier by the excellent defence of the yellows, which was pretty solid throughout, despite the attacking talent on show in the red team.

The closest the red team got in the first half was a super strike by regular goalscorer Keith Hooper, which was turned around the post by Richens, and Rodgers also had a shot which went narrowly wide unfortunately for the “thinning blonde” striker!

The moment of the first half was as Rob Salway, “took his life in his hands” and dared to nutmeg the colossus aka Barry Sampson, much to the amusement of all attendees on both sides!!

The teams changed ends at half-time and the Reds really poured forwards, putting the Yellows under pressure but the now outfield Tim Richens replaced in goal by Robin Boyd), Paul Chick (on his return after injury, most welcomed by his teammates) and Barry Samson at the heart of most of the good things done by the yellow team in defence, but Henderson always a good outlet for the yellow team. Little Terry Wiltshire was also working hard for his team throughout! And Shaun Palfrey kept buzzing around keeping his team mates focused on the job in hand.

The pressure eventually told as a pinpoint through ball by Paul Rodgers, turning from scorer to provider, found Ben Chick and the young lad showed coolness in front of goal to slot the ball through the legs of Boyd to draw the teams level.

Despite great effort by both teams and a late domination by the Red team there were no further goals as defences stayed solid snd the keeping was of a high level and both teams left the pitch with genuine fist bumping and “see you next week” calls being heard, before the Sponsors - The Cider Barn - was visited to carry on the fun!!

Yellows - Tim Richens, Paul Chick, Barry Sampson, Shaun Palfrey, Terry Wiltshire, Andy Wright, Steve Henderson, Robin Boyd, Andy Burgess

Reds - Rob Salway, Steve Grant, Ben Chick, Paul Rogers, Spencer Lee, Clive Vaughan, New boy Olly, Tim Youngberg, Keith Hooper

LADIES SESSION

Yellows 2 (McConnell 2)

Reds 2 (Rogers 2)

Once again the ladies at Cheddar walking football club had a great evening, ending with a superb match between two excellent teams all of him were playing some fantastic football.

The end result seemed to be a shootout between Liz McConnell and Julie Rogers, as to who could score the most goals, with both players getting a well-deserved pair of goals each.

However, the evening was not just about these two, as the quality on show was excellent throughout with two teams both going out at it “hammer and tong”, in the fairest possible way, and playing football to a high level throughout.

As has been stated before the goals were shared evenly between the two teams, with Rogers getting two for her team, and McConnell getting the same for her team, but the goals scored were the reward for the hard work and high quality put in by all the ladies on show that evening.

There would have been many more goals in fact, but for some superb defending with Nikki Llewellyn, as always, leading the way as a top defender, and Gerry Averley also showing what a top quality footballer she really is.

There was a constant threat to the goal also from Sarah Williams,  who seemed to create chances at will, but her unselfishness in front of goal worked against her, as she tried to pass to set other people up when the goal was at her mercy!

As always Chelsea Llewellyn was energy personified throughout the game and, also as in every week, Julie Dwyer’s control and ability were second to none, as she caused a constant threat on her team’s right hand side.

And if Chelsea was energetic, she was matched by the impressive Nicky Frewin who was a constant bundle of energy throughout!

New player Jan Jones was really impressive with the ball, and worked hard without it to help her team out.

Special praise also has to go to Cheryl Ward, who was a threat throughout, especially with her movement off the ball, which unselfishly created a lot of space for her teammates.

And Cheryl seemed to work extremely well and created a good partnership with Jo Franks,  whose commitment and communication again was also of the highest quality.

A drawn result was probably a fair result on the evening as both teams deserved not to lose, in fact both teams deserve to win (however this cannot happen!)

Yellows - Chelsea Llewellyn, Liz McConnell, Julie Dwyer, Sarah Williams, Gerry Averley,

Reds - Julie Rogers, Janet Jones, Nikki Llewellyn, Cheryl Ward, Jo Franks, Nicky Frewin

CHEDDAR WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB QUIZ

On Friday, the 1st of October Cheddar Walking Football Club held its first ever quiz at the Riverside Inn, Cheddar.

Firstly the club would like to thank Huw and Jo at the Riverside Inn, Cheddar for their excellent hospitality and their ongoing support of our club.

The quiz was very loosely based on a series of TV and radio quizzes with such titles as tenable, Pointless, PopMaster, A question of sport and many others.

The evening was very much “too and fro” in terms of competition, but the ultimate winners were Hooper's Heroes; a team consisting of the club treasurer, Keith Hooper, his son Matt, Matt’s wife Harriet, and also Keith's wife Helen.

This team narrowly pipped the chairman's team which featured the superstar quiz brain of Steve Gooding, alongside his vice chairman, Steve Henderson, and “Bristol’s cleverest”, aka Andy Wright; and ultimately it was only the choice of the word “City” instead of “United” that cost this all star team the title, and caused many “arguments” amongst the team of friends!!

On a serious note, the club had a fantastic evening, as did all of the attendees, with £520 being raised!

This type of funding is invaluable for a small club like this, as it has helped us not only pay for kit snd a venue to play but has also allowed us to purchase a defibrillator, and also set up training through our excellent first aid team (Chris King, Rob Salway and Paul Rodgers) in the very near future.

Such a great amount raised was mainly due to a good number of entrant teams, but also a fantastic selection of raffle prizes which meant that raffle tickets were snapped up.

A lot of the players put raffle prizes for the club which was really kind, but amongst the prizes were two very special ones

One was provided by the Almshouse Tearooms in Axbridge, providing a afternoon tea for two,

Another was a very kind gesture from WC Maunders who provided a £25 gift voucher, to allow someone to purchase items at the local store.

It was agreed that a fantastic evening was had by all, even the ones who did not win; with many laughs had over the evening and great revenue raised for the club.

It is hoped that we will have another one fairly soon and we would urge any readers of this to get their teams in as soon as they hear of the next one.

We do not want to compete with other local hostelries, and their excellent quizzes, ours is merely a “one off”,  which will probably happen quarterly (four times a year) rather than become stale and dull, just to help raise funds for the club.
