After a long break and a few pounds put on, mainly by Tim Richens (who Jock Rodgers immediately named “Razor”, as in Ruddock!!) the chaps returned to the “Theatre of Fun”, aka Kings Leisure for the restart of walking football and a feast of football was served up by the 17 attendees, a number even more impressive when you consider quite a number of regular players live in Tier 3 so could not attend.

Injuries also robbed the match of a number of key players but still a fantastic game ensued with the Blues having an extra player, but the Yellows running out deserved winners!

The early exchanges were close as both teams worked hard on and off the ball, the Blues hoping their deadly strike force of Hooper and Scott could get early goals but these two met resistance from the solid defending of Colin Batt and the youngest Attwood, Toby (being offered a ride in the fire engine by former fire officer, Paul Rodgers) but Attwood junior was not put off by the antics of the bald ex fireman!

The yellows had more possession but failed to use it wisely and it was the constant probing of Jerry King and Russell Young, alongside the speed and energy of Clive Vaughan, Ben Chick and Tim Youngberg, that were creating the better chances, only denied by the sterling work by Richens and Boyd at the back for the blues.

However, after Richens went in goal, disrupting the blues defence, the yellows opened the scoring through Toby Attwood, for which he didn’t get his “fire truck travel” that he was promised!!

Soon after though it was 1-1 as Steve Henderson, showed his two, younger, strike partners how to do it, as he shot past the awesome Bob Bunn in goal.

No more goals were scored despite some lovely football, with Neville Hiscox passing accurately and decisively every time he got the ball, and his brother in law, Paul Rodgers was doing what he does best throughout, namely winning the ball and giving it to the creative players.

The player who took the eye with his ball control and skill was Kev Attwood, making sure his two sons, Ben and Toby, on opposite sides, did not squabble!!

With a 1-1 half time score, the eight men of the yellows expected one of the blues to change sides, but no one wanted to change, and, as the score was level, no changes were made.

Despite having a player less, and the ball spending most of the time in their half, the yellows were the experts of the counter attack and the speed of Vaughan, scoring two goals, and the sneakiness of the yellow team (scoring a goal through Ben Chick, while Tim Richens was off fetching a ball!!) saw them cruise into a 4-1 lead, and despite camping in and around the yellows’ area the blues could not break through and the 4-1 lead was converted to a 4-1 win!

Another great evening, which was harder work than most players had expected (due to the extra weight on show!) but still a fantastic use of an hour or so, with the players already looking forward to another match on Tuesday night!

The message was clear from the players - Covid will not stop us having our fun, and exercise, but we will respect it and make sure we stay safe!

So if you want a Covid aware evening of fun, why not turn up to play, or even watch!

Sessions are every Tuesday at 7:30 and only £3 (but free for the first two sessions!!)
