Oranges 1-0 Yellows (12/8/20)

Yet another thrilling walking football encounter was seen at Cheddar in Wednesday night, this time played at Sharpham Road.

There was only one goal in the game, although this was down to some fantastic defending by the yellows, especially in their goal Bob "the cat" Bunn.

There was however one goal scored, by super striker, not Paul Randall, but Keith Hooper and this was enough to give the Oranges a hard won, but hot, victory.

The game, in stifling heat, opened with 15 players on show and the yellow team had the extra man advantage, due to Rob Sheldon (captain of the yellows) being more sneaky than Bruce Bayliss (captain of the Oranges)!

However the lack of numbers did not deter the orange team as they were led forward throughout by Paul Chick, with the other Orange players playing a great supporting role.

Tim Youngberg in the goal was looking solid and reliable and giving the new players, both of whom were playing for the yellows, Martyn Harrill and Andy Wright, little opportunity to create a scoring debut for themselves.

Tim Richens was also a colossus at the back for the Orange team and he had to be, in order to manage the constant goal threat of Steve Henderson and Tim Horwood, as well as the guile of Steve Grant.

On the occasions when the Oranges did go forward, Clive Vaughan was back to his dynamic self and created many chances for the forward line, prompted and assisted  in midfield by Bruce Bayliss and Neville Hiscox, rolling back the years!

Although a player down the Orange team were also able to call on Ben Chick, with his dad, Andy, going to the Yellow team, where the Man U fan was a driving force all evening!

Once again it looked like all of the chances created by the Oranges were going to come to nothing as they met with Bunn’s tremendous resilience, but eventually, just before half-time, Hooper scored his regular goal and allowed his team to go into the break with a slight advantage.

The second half saw the Orange team keeping possession extremely well throughout (mainly because they were tired and sweaty!) and Youngberg, having gone outfield to allow Richens to go in goal, added even more dynamism to his team.

There were promising attacks by the Yellow team, especially when Harrill, Grant and Henderson had the ball, but the determined players of the Orange team, were destined to hold onto the lead until the final whistle.

In fact the best chances fell to the Oranges, but the super keeper title was passed on from Bunn to Jock Rodgers and he kept his own clean sheet, although he spent a lot of time in the bushes in the dying minutes!!

The final whistle was greeted by all players with some joy, as this meant it was almost "pub time"!

It also meant they could race off and get some shade to escape the heat!
