For the second time Cheddar walking football club held its own “in house mini tournament”, and a lot of great football was on display from a number of very good teams but, bearing in mind that the Orange team had only six players (including two goalkeepers - neither of whom played in goal!) they did fantastically to win all three of their games with old maestro, Jerry King, and new stars Barry Sampson and Joe Malik very much to the fore. However, the old stagers, Clive Vaughan, Tony Scott and Bobby Bunn were also crucial to the success of the team on the evening.
Unfortunately the usual referee, Merv Brean, was unable to be at the session due to a cold, which he did not want to pass on to the other players. Fortunately, there were two fantastic referees able to control the matches, Rob Sheldon being excellent on one pitch and Tim Richens turning up on the other one!
There were very few goals on the night, most of which were scored by the Orange team, but all games were extremely close, competitive, but fun, and many draws were seen as a result of a well-balanced set of teams turning out following a very unusual, certainly not the normal routine, training session just beforehand, in order to allow players to stretch properly (actually this was just an opportunity for Tim Richens to count the number of players and make sure that all teams have the same number of players!
It was great to see so many players on display, and shows how the strength of the Walking Football Club at Cheddar has improved and the chaps would still welcome anybody who may fancy a game, whether it is just to watch and/or go to the pub afterwards and “put the world to rights” at the “home” of our sponsors – The Cider Barn!
