Cheddar entered only their second tournament and achieved a great set of results, AND had a great time too, despite injuries to their “superstar” Paul Randall during the tournament (injuring his leg shooting), elder statesman Keith Eccleston injured by a team mate in the warm up and also to England triallist, Bruce Bayliss, who’s knees were bright purple by the end of the afternoon!

Winning their first game and not letting in a goal in the first three games, led to the Cheddar side having visions of an afternoon of non stop success, but a combination of

·        breaks (meaning “old legs” seized up) between matches

·        lack of understanding of the rules and the refereeing decisions

·         top play by many opponents (especially precise finishing)

meant that the end result was a few wins, a couple of odd goal defeats and a couple of draws for the Cheddar side!

But, more importantly, a great deal of fun was had - with the chaps appearing on the ITV local news later as the cameras were at Clevedon Town (for someone called David Beckham, not for Chris King, lol!!)

Every player gave 100% during the afternoon, with some players so committed to their team mates that they played through the pain threshold, gestures that the rest of the team really appreciated!

After a mixed bag of results and the teams first ever tournament win, the afternoon finished perfectly with a comeback win over superb hosts, Clevedon Town, in the last game.

The home team scored first with yet another shot into the corner of the Cheddar net, again giving Richens no chance (the young keeper being faultless during the day but beaten by some superb finishing in several games!) but two more goals from the goal machine, Keith Hooper, and a first ever goal for Chris King, to the delight of his team mates, saw the Gold and Blacks end the afternoon on a high, making the drink in the “Drum and Monkey” after the game even more enjoyable!!

The group are already looking forward to the next one in Yeovil on 9th April (in Yeovil) and thanks to Somerset FA for organising it!
