LATEST MATCH REPORTS

29 July 2021

This was the highest quality game seen at Cheddar so far and a 3-3 was “ebb and flow” throughout with goals galore, some great defending, much one touch and high quality passing, with new faces and older ones all enjoying the evening!

The scoring was started by Paul Rodgers, taking off his “stinky bib” to trick the Black’s defence and then sent the massive frame of Barry Sampson - in goal for the blacks - the wrong way (he gave Sampson “the eyes”!!) and it was ended by a superb shot from big Spencer Lee (now with the nickname “Frank”, as in Spencer!!) that arrowed into the net.

In between these goal was a hat trick from Paul Chick (the first being some comical keeping from Paul Rodgers that even “wobble” - Colin Batt - laughed at!)

A regular goal from the club’s own “superstar” Paul Randall was in the middle of all this chaos too!!

A great contribution also came from the new “boy” Andy Bayliss, and later in from his daughter Jade, who joined in and looked far from out of place with great control and reading of the game!

Another great game this week saw Spencer Lee’s black team sneak a close 2-1 win as the SAS (Shearer and Sutton) attack of Rodgers (becoming a regular scorer!) and Palfrey scored either side of a freak own goal by Underhill, who caught his keeper, Bob Bunn, napping!!

Once again Jade Bayliss was the player of the match, despite the “young superstar” giving away two free kicks for knocking over Andy Burgess and Paul Rodgers - to the amusement of everyone there!

Once again, as in the week before, the game was superbly refereed by Tim Richens, in the absence of regular referee, Mervyn Brean, clearly Richens had learnt from the “Winscombe Maestro”!!

As always much fun was had by all players, with good quality on show and many giggles had - before some players retired to the sponsors (The Cider Barn) for a half of cider or two!!

On the day before they played a cup game against Weston, Clevedon’s experienced players travelled to the relative newcomers of Cheddar for a hard, but fairly, fought game which was in the balance throughout!

Cheddar started with a strong unit and took a deserved early lead through Paul Chick but the visitors were well organised and dangerous throughout!

Their experience, and ability, saw them score three goals (to win the game) but Cheddar stayed competitive throughout, with no luck as they came up against a great Clevedon keeper who made several superb saves, and the Cheddar misfortune also saw them hit the woodwork twice!

It has to be said that a great game was helped by some really top notch refereeing by Merv Brean, as always!

Praise should also go to the great touch line support given by those ex firemen- Paul Rodgers and Rob Salway.

Cheddar played 3 x 18 minute games in a mini tournament at Frome, with all squad players involved and three competitive games ensuing. All rounded off with a great “team bonding” session (and a couple of pints) at the Vine Tree in Frome, where all four team went to enjoy the evening - the beauty of walking football is that you can fall out, argue, compete and battle but once it’s over everyone is good mates again!

The first game against Shepton saw the Mallet players reverse their 1-0 defeat at Cheddar a couple of weeks ago.

Cheddar started with the subs from the game against Clevedon at the weekend and the game looked set for a 0-0 with defences on top (Tim Richens starring in defence for Cheddar, and writing this report!!!!) but a late goal from Shepton saw them snatch a victory!

In the second game, a feisty game with a much stricter referee, against Frome, Cheddar suffered a two goal defeat with the loss of one player, for running too much, to cope with.

But, arguing aside, every player gave 100% in the cause but ultimately the greater experience and organisation of the hosts saw them win the game.

The third game saw Cheddar get their only win as a Paul Randall goal, combined with some great keeping by Bunn, saw the Cheddar side reverse their defeat at Peasedown a few weeks ago!

A great team performance almost saw star man Rob “mini me” Salway score a late goal but just fail to control the ball at the crucial time!

Overall the team was delighted to play in a well organised evening and certainly did not let themselves down on the evening and on and off the pitch were a credit to Cheddar Walking Football Club.

Special praise must go to the Managers - Shaun Palfrey and Paul Rodgers - for their superb organisation, and fun!

General opinion was that, on the night, Cheddars star player was Russell Young!
