Another fantastic night of women's walking football at Cheddar, where 21 ladies turned up to show yet more improvement on their excellent start to the game.

The ladies have their usual warmup session which involved passing the ball, moving, and apparently lots of laughter!

The game started with both teams showing the improvement in their individual and group play, and it was great to see new face, Jane Morgan who had travelled from Clevedon, offer to go in goal (a problem position currently for the ladies but one that we expect to resolve soon).

The Yellow team took an early control, with the usual suspects all very much to the fore, but the Red team was always a threat whenever they had possession.

This was demonstrated completely when halfway through the first half, the ball got to the feet of Sarah Williams, and the blonde striker smashed an unstoppable shot home to make it 1-0 to the Red team.

The goal was a bit of a shock as Nikki Llewellyn was a superb, composed defender, once again, and it takes a special effort to get a goal against her defending!

The Reds were very mobile throughout but were indebted to some excellent defending particularly by Julie Postins (who is quickly establishing herself as a very good defender) but often well supported by Julie Dwyer and Leslie Chick.

Two other new players, Karen Heal and Jo Harbury were a threat every time the Yellow team went forward, but there was a fantastic midfield battle taking place between some of the more established members of the group with Kelly Hillier Julie Rogers and Nikki Frewin competing hard for the Yellows against the equally experienced Wendy Scott, Jane White and Gerry Averley for the Red team .

For the red team Sally Batt, despite a hip injury that means she will be out for a while on medical advice, battled superbly and, despite saying she would have to go off, completed a game fantastically for her team (showing what a great team player she is).

Another “trooper” on the night was the unknown player who received a blow to a part of her body that a man would not be allowed to treat! But she carried on regardless to have a great game!

Julie Dwyer and Dawn Clark were giving the Reds great width in their team, and creating “get out” opportunities and the non-stop effort of Cheryl Ward meant that her team was always able to create chances and the team would have taken a 2-0 lead but for a fantastic stop by male goalkeeper, not someone who usually plays in goal but did superbly in this match, Colin “Wobble” Batt (which he has constantly recounted ever since!!)

Despite the chances that were created for the Red team, it was still always seemingly a question of when the Yellows would score the next goal past the first choice Men's goalkeeper, Chris King, and the ladies from the Wells end of the A371 (Well, Draycott and Rodney Stoke!)  Donna Paul and Pat Dudden were constantly involved in creating chances for the team, but King was not to be beaten in the Reds goal and ultimately the score line ended up with a 1-0 victory to the red team, but more importantly everyone, once again, involved in the session thoroughly enjoyed it and are already looking forward to next week, as well as the upcoming intergender match against the men's over 65 team which should be great fun!

If you want to be part of this great group then as long as you are female, want to have fun, want to get fit and generally are fed up with lockdown then please come along as the sessions are at Kings Astro pitch every Tuesday at 7:30, so please arrive by 7:15.

Sessions are only £3 each, with the first two sessions (like a tester to see if you like it) free of charge!
