Once again the “theatre of mature cheese” (a.k.a. Kings leisure centre) saw a thrilling match between a excellent red team who dominated the first half and a hard-working and resilient black team who ultimately earned a draw mainly through a fantastic second-half performance.

It was a game brilliantly refereed by Merv Brean and his youthful assistant, Rob Sheldon.

Earlier on the pressure was very much put on by the red team with Paul Chick, Russell Young  and Clive Vaughan very much at the forefront of everything that they did but it was "the rugby man" Kevin Rosser who opened the scoring with an unstoppable drive that gave “Scottish Pete” no chance in the black’s goal.

Soon afterwards “the man from over the border” had conceded a second goal.

This time Spencer Long’s super shot came back off the post to find Clive Vaughan following-up, to slot home and make it a comfortable looking 2-0 lead.

The Black team continued to push forward with “new boy Terry”, “Mini me“ Rob Salway and another new boy Aiden Malik,  who looked totally impressive throughout alongside his dad, Joe, all making great contributions!

To all intents and purposes it was going to be a comfortable 2-0 lead to the Red team at the break, but the Black team sprung a surprise late on as the younger Chick, Ben, stepped up to slot the ball past the “shovel like” hands of Barry Sampson to make it 2-1 at the break. It was going to take a great effort to beat Sampson and that’s what we got!!

The second half saw the black team now kicking down the hill and getting more into the game, but they suffered a very early shock as the star on the evening, once again, Paul Chick smashed the ball home at the near post, giving the keeper no chance and making the score a comfortable looking 3-1 to the reds.

However the red team had not reckoned on the influence that, very senior player, Steve Grant was going to provide for the black team

Grant first of all got his team back into the game by scoring with five minutes ago, and ultimately got his team a well deserved draw by adding his second, and the team’s third, with just a minute left on the clock.

At this point a win was possible for either team, but would not have felt quite right as both teams had worked so hard to get take away something on the evening.

Another great evening of fun, quality football and laughs had ensued, This was only added to, as the some of the team sat and talked the usual nonsense at the home of the club’s sponsor, The Cider Barn.

If you would like to have a look at this or even try it out, why not just turn up at the Kings leisure centre on a Thursday evening at 7 o'clock and you'll be made to feel extremely welcome.

In addition to last weeks session, there has been no match report for last two weeks so the roving reporter for Cheddar Walking Football Club felt it was important to acknowledge these matches, so here goes!!

17th June 2021

Last week there was a thrilling game but one team dominated due to some superb finishing as Steve Grant got his first goal in over 30 years (allegedly!) and this goal was sandwiched by two, including one super strike,  from Russell Young, rolling back the years to his Cheddar Colts days and looking a threat every time he had the ball.

10th June 2021

In the previous week there was a gripping game as one team looked, on paper,  a lot stronger than the other but the so-called “weaker team” actually prevailed by a shoreline of 2-1, with the winning goal coming in the last couple of minutes as the “penalty king”, Tim Richens, stepped up to slot the ball, with no steps in his “run up”, past the ultra impressive, and massive, Barry Sampson in the goal.

This penalty was made even more impressive efforts of Paul Rogers to put off his opponent by talking to him as he set up, but nothing was to stop Richens getting a win for his team!
