Cheddar Walking FC held their first ever “bring your son to work” day as Keith Hooper and Kev Attwood brought their sons - Matt and Ben.

And their Orange team showed the benefit of youth as they ended the game fitter and most likely to win, but they couldn’t get the better of their wily old opposition and the game ended in a fair, and hard working, draw!

The game started with an even number of players on each side with skippers for the night - Tim Youngberg and Colin Batt - sorting things out superbly!

Both teams were organised and playing good football but defences were on top until the Oranges had a moment of madness.

The ball was was with Neville Hiscox, but the defender was being pressured by his brother in law - Paul Rodgers - and took the sensible route to knock the ball back to his keeper, Robin Boyd. However the Fairlands man was surprised by this pass and it rolled past him into the net - there were lots of claims for the goal, with Paul Randall showing his experience of being a good striker by claiming the goal and Paul Rodgers claiming the last touch but all agreed it was an own goal and a Rodgers assist!

More bad luck was to befall the Shepton legend (Hiscox) later in the game when his long range shot flew over Richens, in goal, and into the net but, much to Jock’s glee, the ball was well over head height and the goal was disallowed!

Despite much good build up play there were no more goals in the rest of the opening period, the best effort being a superb strike by Russell Young, that left Richens stranded but unfortunately for the youngest Young, the ball whistled past the post!

The second half saw the Oranges coming down the hill with the two Attwood’s leading the way, but the Yellows defence holding firm and Richens looking unbeatable in the goal!

But the chubby keeper’s goal was eventually breached as star striker, Keith Hooper, smashed a shot from range which Richens looked to have covered but the ball dipped wickedly at the last minute to deceive the goalie and level the scores!

Despite the great build up play, the fantastic defending and excellent keeping, by Gooding and Batt, kept the score unchanged!

There was a great chance for the yellows as Batt lost control of the ball, for it to roll to Rodgers, with an open goal, but the aged striker (who stayed up front all game - in old language he was “goal hanging”!) somehow missed the target to laughter from all players, especially the keeper, Batt, who had been given merciless stick by Rodgers throughout!

The Oranges did eventually score but VAR showed, later in the pub on Sky Sports, that Henderson had sneaked into the area (to be close to his friend, Gooding!!) and the goal was chalked off!

At the end of the game, the players all gave fist bumps and celebrated another top evening of football and fun!

Now the players just want to find out what will happen about Covid to see if the game is on next week and the foreseeable future!
