Mini tournament walking football results 9 October 2020 (Writhington School)

Cheddar 0-1 Frome

Cheddar Team - Chris King, Paul Brice, Tim Richens, Andy Wright, Kev Attwood, Tim Youngberg, Paul Randall

Subs (all used) Clive Vaughan, Jerry King

Cheddar played against an excellent Frome team, with a strong side themselves but lot to the only goal of the game as they, for the only time, lost their shape and left excellent keeper, Chris King, exposed!

For those who think that walking football is a goal every attack, they would have seen to the contrary as two excellent footballing sides largely nullified each other by superb defending!

Anytime the attacks did get on top, the two keepers were more than a match for them!

The one goal of the game came midway through the second half as Tim Richens saw that Cheddar’s player of the night, Kev Attwood, was facing an overload in midfield and went to help but his opponent found the space he had vacated and the ball found him and he comply slotted home from close range to give Chris King no chance in the Cheddar goal!

Cheddar 1-2 Shepton Mallet

Cheddar Team - Chris King, Andy Wright, Colin Batt, Tim Richens Jerry King, Kev Attwood (1), Robin Boyd

Subs (all used) - Paul Brice, Tim Youngberg, Paul Randall, Clive Vaughan

In their second match of the night Cheddar faced another far more experienced team and, despite a lot of good football they again lost by the odd goal.

An early set of exchanges that saw both teams attack with relish ended up floundering on great defence and the substitution of Cheddars central defender, Tim Richens, saw the “mature cheese” lose a little shape but the opening goal was not linked in anyway, it was just a terrible set of circumstances that saw a well hit shot that seemed to be covered by the diving King in Cheddars goal , half blocked by a brave Robin Boyd, only to deflect past the helpless keeper!

Not long after it was 2-0 as another close range shot gave King no chance.

Cheddar deservedly got their first goal of the night as Kev Attwood smashed one home but, despite great work by Paul Randall, Jerry King and Attwood himself, the Cheddar side could not get level.

All the players worked really hard but couldn’t “catch a break” and the ended up with another one goal defeat!

Overall, the Cheddar side were happy that, despite losing both games, they had not been embarrassed in games against more “street wise” and experienced opponents who, like Cheddar, played great football, in the right spirit. And this experience will stand the Cheddar side in good stead for future matches!
