Cheddar Ladies WFC

Match Report 14/6/21

This was certainly a question of quality over quantity as several regulars were unable to play, due to

Injuries and illness, on a warm, sticky night at the Theatre of Mature Cheese!

However those on show still put up a fantastic game with the ladies demonstrating what a massive improvement they have all made in the past few weeks!

The teams lined up resplendent in their new numbered bibs with a white team featuring Rob Sheldon (in goal), Julie Rodgers, Gerry Averley - who stayed in her feet this week, Jane White, Jill Bassett, Cheryl Ward and Gill Sage.

Opposing these, in red, were Lisa Machin (playing in goal to avoid further aggravating her leg injury), Nikki Llewellyn, Julie Postins, Julie Dwyer, Chelsea Llewellyn & Sarah Williams.

Both teams started brilliantly with the ball being passed around sharply and accurately, but with Julie Rodgers AND an extra player on the red team, they took a territorial advantage! But they could not get the better of the experienced and top notch defence of Llewellyn senior and Julie “I’m not good enough” Postins (who actually is more than good enough!!).

Despite having a player less the red team was also a threat with the younger Llewelllyn, Chelsea, constant energy, alongside the faultless Julie Dwyer, all the time Sarah Williams was a threat in attack too!

However it was Dwyer who was the hero(ine) of the evening as she, deservedly, scored with a long range shot that left Sheldon flat footed!

The second half saw the game with the same pattern as Rodgers drove her team forward with Cheryl Ward, Gill Sage and Gerry Averley giving great support and Jill Bassett neat and tidy in all she did!

But despite great effort and good class, the whites were not able to breach the red defence of Postins & Llewellyn, and on the very rare occasion they did, they found Lisa Machin unbeatable!

Despite both teams playing great football, the defences were on top and no more goals were scored and Julie Dwyer was able to claim the starting role with her winning game!

Despite a few missing this was a great evening, once again!

If you fancy giving it a try, having fun and keeping fit, why not come down on Tuesdays at 7:30 and join in!

If you would prefer to practice before playing a game why not join in on the coaching training session at Sharpham Road on Saturday (19th June) where the group will be practicing passing & kicking from midday!
