A fantastic return to walking football for Cheddar Ladies Walking Football Club last Wednesday and 16 players in attendance (with Lisa Konkol unable to play due to injury/illness but still there!!).

The evening started with a few light “warm up” exercises and the Red team won the noughts and crosses 3-2 but revenge was gained on the pitch by the yellows 1-0, despite having a penalty saved by the lively Colin Batt (four of the men were in attendance to referee the game and play in goal!)

The first half saw both teams looking nervous and unsure what to expect but some great football was played by all the ladies on show, with Julie Rodgers a leading light as befitting her long experience as a stalwart of Cheddar Hockey Club!

The yellows dominated play with Jane White showing good skill in all she did and soon both teams were showing great ability to pass accurately to their own team mates, Lesley Chick, in central midfield showing much of the passing ability of her husband, male player Paul Chick, but Paul’s sister, Dawn Clarke was showing that the family football ability was genetic as her control and passing was excellent throughout!

Although the yellows dominated possession they met with strong defending by Sally Batt and Julie Dwyer, and there was always a red threat on the break as Wendy Scott was lively in attack, well supported by Kelly Hillier, Julie Postins and Cheryl Ward who were linking up well in the midfield. Nicky Fewin was also very instrumental in much of the good work the Reds did too!

However, the biggest threat was coming from the Yellows, especially Donna Paul and the teams own “Alan Shearer” (well, she’s a Geordie!) Jill Bassett, both well backed up by Karen Lawrence who seemed to be everywhere!

Despite lots of effort and no little good football, the score at the break was scoreless with the highlight of the half being a long raking pass by Julie Rodgers that was called for, and brilliantly controlled by Jill Bassett, but the threat was snuffed out by Sally Batt and her fellow defenders!

The change of ends at the break seemed to be missed by Kelly Hillier and Sarah Williams who both took the ball from one end of the pitch to the other without being tackled only to be advised that the teams swapped ends at half time!! Cue much laughter!!

Despite that both ladies - Hillier for the reds and Williams for the yellows - had brilliant second halves, driving their teams forward in search of a goal.

Eventually the best chance came to the yellows as a red defender went into their own area and conceded a penalty but a well struck, accurate shot by Rodgers was superbly saved by Colin Batt in the reds’ goal!

Batt was helpless shortly after when a great shot by Jane White flew into the bottom corner of the goal to open the scoring!

Despite much great attacking by the reds they were unable to score an equaliser and after a good session the yellow team won the match and a shriek of celebration was heard!

All players said they enjoyed themselves  and said they would be back next week (session is on Tuesday at 7:30), and if you’d like to give it a go and have fun, why not turn up and try, don’t take our word for it, ask one of the ladies who played this week!!
