Cheddar v Caldicot

At Kings, it was the first ever "international" game between the Welsh side from Caldicot and the English side from Cheddar.

After some confusion over pitch usage the game started and it was agreed to play four quarters of 15 minutes, with alternate games between the over 50s of both sides and the over 60s!

The first game was between the “youngsters” of the over 50s and this was a close fought encounter with both teams defending strongly, although not as impressive in attack.

The opening Cheddar side was Chris King, Richens, Palfrey, Attwood, Jerry King (not related to the keeper, Chris), Russell Young and up front Keith Hooper.

On paper this was a very strong Cheddar side,  and in the majority of the game they showed this strength, although they lacked a finishing ability which was surprising in view of some of the players on show, especially their regular hit shot, Keith Hooper. But even Hooper could not get his goal on the scraps his team gave him!

This was a game of a few chances and the 0-0 result was probably about right on the evening and both teams could be relatively satisfied with how the game had finished, despite the lack of goals.

The second game was a game between the old boys, the over 60s, of both sides and this game was totally dominated by the touring side.

However they had not reckoned with meeting the superb goalkeeper, that is Bob “the cat” Bunn, who defied virtually everything that was thrown at him by the impressive Welsh players!

There were very few chances created by the Cheddar “oldies”, however their defence was, despite being under pressure, strong in the main and every time the tourists got through they came up against Bunn, earning a man of the match award for his superb performance!

However the game was won by the odd goal as the continual pressure from the Caldicot side saw their striker slot home, giving Bunn no chance just for once.

The third game was another game between the over 50s and, as in the first game, the score was 0-0 after 15 hard minutes, despite changes in personnel.

Once again Chris King in goal for the Cheddar side was impressive, showing anything Bunn could do, he could do as well, and the big keeper dealt with everything that he needed to, although his defence had done such a good job they kept the other team at bay for most of the game.

Right at the end there was even a chance for the player/manager, Sean Palfrey, but unfortunately the striker was unable to slot home when he looked in a good position.

Once again after a tough game, the score was level, so both teams came away with immense credit having not conceded a goal on the night!

The last game was between the over 60s sides again, and in this one the Caldicot side did score 4 goals to beat the hard-working, yet outplayed on the night, Cheddar side and it was the Welsh men who took the bragging rights back to the Cider Barn (Cheddar WFC’s sponsors) after the game where a superb spread was laid on by the staff, much to the enjoyment of all players, who also kept socially distant during the whole evening and Cheddar can look forward to a return visit, to Wales, as they were invited by the Caldicot players after the game, and this should be another event where even more friendships will be made.

For the 50s, the team manager gave man of the match to Chris King!

For the 60’s the player of the match was Jock Rodgers, who also managed the team and gave the award!!!!!

Mention also has to go to new referee, Merv Brean (ably assisted by Ben Chick) in the 50s games, and did a great job as did Rob Sheldon and Neville Hiscox in the 60’s game - all players, from both sides, commended highly all the officials in show!!
