OUR FIRST SESSION

The Ladies Group held its first, and hopefully not only, ladies only session, at Sharpham Road on Saturday and a great session was had by all and the standard was excellent for the ladies first try, but more importantly, every player enjoyed the session!
After a brief, but important, warm up session, the ladies were split into two teams and each “given” one of the male walking footballers - who were there to add some coaching support - to play in goal for them.
The yellow team were quickly into the attack but were repelled by some strong defending by the reds, with Beth Rowlinson-Baker and Kelly Hillier full of energy, and great skill too. The reds quickly took an early lead as Rowlinson-Baker slotted past Andy Wright, trying to protect his goal but his keeping was no match for the Wells’ lady’s shooting!
The second half saw the Yellows come to light as Rob Sheldon replaced Wright in their goal, soon after the restart Sheldon was picking the ball out of his goal as the “young Alan Shearer” that is Jill Bassett slotted home like a top Geordie centre forward!
Sarah Williams and Lisa Norman seemed to have limitless energy and were popping up everywhere and it was fitting that Jane White eventually pulled a goal back for the Yellows, as reward for her superb performance throughout!
Despite a lot of huffing and puffing, literally, the red team held firm whilst creating chances themselves as Beth Rowlinson-Baker was all over the pitch, earning herself the “player of the match” unofficial award, and Chris King, in the reds goal was able to stop the Yellows getting an equaliser!
A tremendous game, a lot of fun and a few smiles meant it had been a great, but chilly despite the sunshine, morning for all concerned!
Weather permitting, the group will be meeting again next Saturday, 17th October at Sharpham Road, from 10:30 (arrive earlier if you can!) - speak to those who played, and then give it a go yourself!

REPORT ON SESSION DATED 17TH OCTOBER 2020

Another great ladies session at Sharpham Road this morning, Saturday.
A couple of last week’s attendees were unable to get to the game this week but there was a new face, Jess Wright, who turned up with her dad, and Cheddar men’s walking footballer, Andy Wright.
The junior Wright had a great morning of football, covering herself in glory, with a well earned hat-trick, all scored past her father, and as he said "I didn't let her score" but she earned the goals for herself.
However, it was not all about the new player on the day, as the players who turned up again this week, also showed a massive improvement in their personal performances, as well as in their general team play. This improvement did not come at the expense of amusement and fun however, as all players did a great job of playing football,
The orange team were led strongly by Jane White, earning herself the player of the match award, as well as scoring two superb goals along the way.
Credit also has to go to Kelly Hillier (note we have spelt the name right this week!) who  played throughout with a muscle strain, in her leg, but who also showed tremendous ability and awareness in her general game.
Having been an end to end game throughout, and a personal battle between White and Wright, the last word on the day was had by Sarah Williams, having a superb game herself and popping up all over the place, who scored a superb goal with the very last kick of the game to leave the final score at three goals each.
Having also, prior to the game, gone through a stretching and warm up exercise routine, which involves lots of passing and provided improvement in technique, the girls then finished the game, with smiles on their faces and already looking forward to the session next week when several of the players who turned up in week one are expected to return, as well as the players who have been unable to attend as yet but are expected to appear.
If you want to be part of this great fun group then simply turn up at Sharpham Road, Cheddar at 10:30am on Saturday morning.
And, to. remind everyone the game is a non contact sport with no running and it is free to attend and you are more than welcome to bring friends and all family if that makes you feel comfortable. The only kit required is any that you want to bring, but the essentials are a pair of trainers or something similar in the way of footwear.
