Goals - Gooding 2, Pople

A VAR “controversy” ensured that this close fought walking football match ended with honours even and bragging rights shared!

A great turn out saw a 14 players, with referee, and the weather even held out for the first five minutes, until the heavens opened but the players, mainly being mature men, braved it out until things settled again!

It was in this weather break that the “big controversy” happened as organiser, and yellows keeper, Tim Richens, left the field to put the spare bibs out of the rain, but Oranges “speed merchant” Clive Vaughan took advantage to score in the empty net!

The incident was referred to a car park in Cheddar Gorge whereupon the decision came back to Richens “no goal” being the VAR verdict!

This gave great hope to the Orange team as their “youngsters”, the Bens - Chick and Attwood - showed great innovation and imagination.

But it was then the “Andrew Burgess Show” as the “bald Budgie” rolled out his “White Dion Dublin” performance to smash two unstoppable efforts past the helpless Yellows Keeper, Steve Gooding!

These goals were the difference at the end of the first period as the yellows looked to defend up the hill in the second half!

Soon however, early in the second period, it was 2-1 as Gooding took revenge and did the keeper with his eyes and slotted home coolly from close range

At this stage it was all yellows led by Paul Chick, MoM as always, but ably supported by Clive Vaughan and his brother in law Pete (who struggled as his team mates kept calling him Phil!!), and Gooding was a constant threat, as was Dave Pople.

Soon after it was Pople who equalised as a powerful strike found its way under the injured body of Jimmer Wornell and within minutes the Yellows took advantage, through Gooding once again as his night reached its high point (he supports Spurs, so that didn’t go too well for him!)

The oranges who had been defended bravely, especially the well organised Robert Sheldon, had to change their approach and, led by Andy Chick and Kev Attwood, they got back on top but were resisted time and again by Paul Chick, and especially by the rugged old stager, Bruce Bayliss.

However eventually the younger Attwood and Chick - both the Bens - carved open a chance and Ben Chick scores a well deserved and vital equaliser for the Oranges!

There was still time for Richens to find himself 1:1 against Bruce Bayliss but a harsh seeming decision by “no nonsense referee” Neville Hiscox, saw the whistle blown for running, just as Richens was about to shoot (and surely score the winner!!), but the strategically timed whistle allowed Bayliss to make a  great save!.
